Lighting Ceremony

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, Chancellor of the Avinashilingam University for Women T.K. Shanmuganandam, and Vice-Chancellor Saroja Prabhakaran at the Lighting Ceremony for the outgoing students at the university in the city on Friday. “Women should be given equal opportunities. They should not be denied the opportunity to education or employment on the basis of their gender,” Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, said here on Friday.

Women should be given equal opportunities

Inaugurating the “Lighting Ceremony” at the Avinashilingam University, she said despite women having proven their worth in all the avenues considered as men’s forte, empowerment had not touched the lives of all women. They were still being marginalised and discriminated against, she lamented. Ms. Jagadeesan asked the outgoing students to take up the cause for such women to whom justice was not delivered. She advised them to seek employment in the areas of their choice. “Empowering a woman leads to empowerment of society,” she said. The job market in India had brought about a lot of opportunities for employment.

Many were not able to make use of these owing to poor communication skills. Strengthening communication skills was of primary importance. The founder of the university, T.S. Avinashilingam Chettiar, was a visionary who believed in education of women and he translated the dream of many a poet and nationalist of the time into a reality. He stood for providing equal opportunities to women.

She advised the girls to have nutritious food and refrain from having junk food and aerated drinks. Girls, especially in colleges, were increasingly becoming addicted to junk food, she observed. Excessive consumption of aerated drinks and such unhealthy foods could lead even to infertility among women, she said. T.K. Shanmuganandam, Chancellor, and Saroja Prabhakaran, Vice Chancellor, spoke.
