The air cargo complex here is getting expanded with works on for additional storage and processing area. The works, which have been started at an outlay of Rs. 1.5 crore, is likely to be completed in nine months. Airport Director K. Hemalatha told that when works would be completed the one-time holding capacity of the complex would be 80 tonnes, which was double the current capacity. The complex now had a dedicated approach road from the one that led to the airport. The expansion works were taken up to improve the export facilities at the airport.
The cargo complex, which started functioning nearly seven years ago, handled 3,476 tonnes during 2007-08 and this was 475 tonnes more than the previous year
The main goods handled at the complex were castings and garments. The export and import cargo handling charges at the air cargo complex here were increased recently, making them on a par with those collected at the airport in Chennai or elsewhere. With this, the revenue of the complex was expected to go up by about Rs. 25 lakh this year though it depended on the cargo handled, she added.
