Govt Allocated 20 Lak For Road Safety

The District Collector, V. Palanikumar, has announced that the Government has allocated Rs. 20 lakh for Coimbatore City and Rs. 5 lakh for Coimbatore Rural District for road safety related works. The sanction is in appreciation of the works done earlier. At a function organised to inaugurate the dedicated licence for learners’ project at the Regional Transport Office (North) recently, Mr. Palanikumar said that every day 300 new vehicles were getting registered. The district that had seven Regional Transport Offices accounted for a vehicular population of close to 7.5 to 8 lakh.

Over 180 licences were suspended and 86 licences were terminated for rash and negligent driving causing death, the Collector said.

Tirupur alone accounted for 3.5 lakh vehicles thus contributing to congestion and increasing number of road accidents. The Transport Department had netted a revenue of Rs. 178.13 crore as against the target of Rs. 183.75 crore. The seven trauma care centres in the district had rendered first aid in 1,681 cases during 2007 and saved 1,541 lives.


In Coimbatore City, in 2007 alone action was initiated against drivers for drunken driving and cases were registered against 336 drivers, 134 licences were suspended and 157 licences were terminated. Over 180 licences were suspended and 86 licences were terminated for rash and negligent driving causing death, the Collector said.
