Man Arrested
Narcotic Intelligence Bureau – Criminal Investigation Department (NIB-CID) sleuths from Coimbatore on Monday arrested a worker engaged in maintaining the gardens on the premises of the Madras Race Club at Race Course in Udhagamandalam. Following a tip-off, the NIB-CID personnel visited the premises and found 48 plants belonging to opium poppy variety grown there along the parking area.
The poppy plants were camouflaged among the other varieties. Investigations revealed that the plants were reportedly grown by the accused for his personal use and was without permission from the competent authority. NIB sleuths said growing opium poppy variety without permission was an offence. A case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985. He has been remanded to judicial custody.
