BU Soon Offer Course In Priesthood
Bharathiar University will offer certificate and diploma courses to male students in temple priesthood, its Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said here on Monday. “According to the new law of the State Government, people belonging to all castes can become temple priests (Archagar). The Government has selected 360 male students from the Backward and Most Backward communities to get training, which will make them qualified priests. From this academic year, Bharathiar University will offer programmes for such candidates,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.
So far, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has been conducting such training programmes. But, there was no recognition by any university. With the Bharathiar University deciding to conduct the programmes, the priests will receive a diploma or certificate based on the course they take. The department and the university would soon sign a memorandum of understanding after consultation regarding the duration of the course and other formalities.
