Exclusive Sports Injury Arthroscopy Clinic Opened
In a first-of-its kind move, Dr David V Rajan, a surgeon specialising in orthopaedic sports medicine, has opened an exclusive sports injury arthroscopy (key-hole) clinic here. Interestingly, Dr David V Rajan was one of the first persons to promote arthroscopy in India, during its introductory stages, besides exclusively treating sportspersons for injuries. Being an expert in knee and shoulder surgeries through arthroscopy, his ‘Ortho One’ clinic located on Triuchy Road will be a relief for the many sportspersons, who are prone to injuries.Speaking to Express, he said that the arthroscopic unit was doing excellent work in managing and rehabilitating all sports-related injuries and sportspersons. “Our team is well established to put sportspersons back in action, at the earliest. That’s the mantra for our success,” he said, adding that a major chunk of the sportspersons (mostly volleyball, basketball and football players) who came for treatment were from Karnataka and Kerala.
Taking cue from the saying, ‘prevention is better than cure’, Rajan, jointly with physiotherapists A Anoop Kumar and Sylvia Edwin, has also brought out a handbook titled Prevention of sports injuries for the benefit of sportspersons. Stressing on the importance of regular exercise, he said, “Many of us are unaware of the importance of stretching and relaxation exercises. Both go hand in hand. Exercising without stretching can lead to pain and disability.” Anoop Kumar said that most of the sports injuries were treated nonsurgically.
The clinic had a state-ofthe- art gym and rehab centre with the latest equipment like polar heart rate monitor, as well as facilities to offer fitness counselling. Express spoke to N Anandakrishnan, a volleyball player representing the Cochin Port Trust team, now under treatment for a knee injury, whose ligament was reconstructed using arthroscopy surgery. “I feel better and hope to be back on the field very soon,” he said with confidence.
The clinic had been part of the sports-medicine team at several State and national-level tournaments. The team has been assigned the Karunya University's sports meet to be held next week. Besides, the sports-medicine team had been attending to the acclaimed Sevens Football Tournament held in Kerala.
