Graduation Day Of SNMV College
Any growth strategy of India has to be based on the development of the human capital, G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, said here recently . Delivering the graduation day address of the SNMV College of Arts and Science, he cited the example of Japan for its strong human capital. “It cannot be denied that with very little mineral resources and raw materials it was able to grow at such a fast pace because of its strong human capital base”.
“While our country has mineral resources including deposits of coal and iron ore, considering the size of the growing population, these are quite inadequate. As we plan for the next four decades, a key determinant for taking the Indian economy forward will be the development of human capital,” the Vice-Chancellor said. He said it was estimated that by 2020 there would be a global manpower shortage of nearly six crore. The demographic bulge was taking place in the age group of 15 to 29. If this was not handled in the right manner, the country would be facing a demographic crisis. “We will have young men and women without any skill sets and therefore unemployable,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.
He called for an integrated approach to education by which students get to explore knowledge in the broader perspective. “Meaningful education should stimulate all aspects of the human intellect. It is true that there is an explosion of knowledge; but we should not forget that there is an erosion of values. One must also focus on being morally good”. Handing over degree certificates to 520 candidates, he exhorted the young graduates to follow the philosophy underlying the educational process – education for life, education through life and education throughout life.
