Rally For Eye Donations
More than 1.20 crore people are visually challenged in the country and 10 lakh are waiting to get eye sight through eye donations, District Collector V. Palanikumar has said. He flagged off a rally aimed at creating awareness on eye donations as part of the fortnight long awareness programme by the District Blindness Control Society (DBCS). More 1,000 school students took part in the rally that wound its way from the Collectorate to Gandhipuram. Mr. Palanikumar has asked all those involved in imparting education to put in their best of efforts to attain 100 per cent literacy.
He was speaking at the World Literacy day celebrations organised by Valar Kalvi. A valarkalvi pledge was administered on the occassion. He said that according to the 2003 Census 80 per cent men and 69 per cent women were found to be educated. Whereas Kerala accounted for 100 per cent literacy.
