Stage Demo By Minority Community
An attempt by the members of the minority community to stage a demonstration near the Central Prison entrance on Monday protesting against denial of remission and release of serial blast case accused caused flutter. The agitators led by the District secretary of the Charitable Trust for Minorities, Ummar Shah, said that 296 convicts who were serving life sentence at the Coimbatore Central Prison were being released on Monday to mark the birth centenary celebrations of the former Chief Minister, C.N. Annadurai. The list of convicts to be released on remission was prepared identifying those who had served seven years of the sentence.Whereas, the serial blasts case undertrials had completed more than 10 years and were not being released. The agitators called it a discrimination against the minorities. The police and revenue officials held talks with them. Following assurances from the Revenue Divisional Officer, M. Balachandran, that their demands would be brought to the notice of the government, the agitation was withdrawn. Traffic on LIC Road from Park Gate to Avanashi Road was briefly disrupted.
