Student Exhibition Of Nirmala

Business management students of Nirmala College for Women selling their wares to visitors at the exhibition organised in the college in Coimbatore on Friday. SEON ’08 – the Student Exhibition of Nirmala – being organised by the Department of Business Management of Nirmala College for Women on Friday, is nothing like a student exhibition. It is a full fledged two-day consumer exhibition with 50 stalls. Only 15 stalls are put up by students.
The rest have been taken by corporates and industry. Most of the popular brands in cars, textiles, mineral water, insurance, fast foods, etc., are on display. According to Lydia H. Swamy, lecturer, the stalls have been hired by the corporates at Rs. 6,000, while the students have paid Rs. 2,000 for the same. Stalls for some self help group women have been given free of cost.

“What is unique about the exhibition is that the students themselves approached the industry to put up stalls. It is a great success in that 35 of them have responded to the students and come to our college to take part in the exhibition. We were not able to accommodate a few,” she says. One can find all that one can expect in any consumer exhibition that is organised at a large level. There are consumer goods, textiles, decorative items, electronics, games stalls, food courts, insurance companies, automobiles, etc. Various competitions have been planned for school and college students.

The students’ stalls will be observed for their marketing skills, display and the profit they make. The best stall will be given a prize sponsored by The Hindu. G. Merlin, a final year BBM student, has put up a stall with three others that sells bags, purses and key chains. “These things are fast moving and much in demand among the youth. We bought the items at a wholesale market; hence our profit margin is slightly high,” she says. The department has planned the event for the first time to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the college. It is open to public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
