Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy (fourth left), Coimbatore Collector V. Palanikumar (fifth left) and PSG institutions’ managing trustee G. Rangaswamy (third left) with the children who underwent free heart surgery. The State Government’s Illam Chirar Irudhaya Padugappu Thittam is benefiting poor children by facilitating free surgery to correct congenital heart defects, Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy said here on Thursday.

Addressing a function organised by the PSG Hospitals to mark the completion of 56 surgeries by this institution, the Minister said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had introduced this scheme to enable the children to undergo life-saving surgery without any delay. This was one of the many health schemes that were aimed at benefiting the poor sections. Children were waitlisted for surgery because of the delay in obtaining assistance from the relief funds of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister. To avoid hardship to the children, the State Government had introduced the new scheme. It had tied up with private hospitals for the surgery wherever the Government Hospital were not equipped to do it.

The Minister appreciated the PSG Hospital for performing 56 surgeries under the scheme. District Collector V. Palanikumar said the scheme was progressing well in Coimbatore and the private hospitals were lending tremendous support to it. Dean (in-charge) of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital V. Kumaran, Managing Trustee of PSG institutions G. Rangaswamy and authorities of the PSG Hospital and the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research were present during the function.
