TNAU Advise To The Farmers

Analyzing higher prices for crops in 'Karthigai Pattam' (November-December) season, Tamil Nadu Agricultural Univesity (TNAU) has advised the farmers to go for early sowing of the seasonal crops. Crops preferred during the season were coriander, cumbu, Bengal gram, sunflower, gingelly, groundnut and maize and an analysis was made to facilitate the farmers in planting decison, according to Dr N Raveendran, project coordinator in the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) in TNAU.

Based on the analysis, it was expected that the prices of Bengal gram per quintal would hover around Rs 2,700 - Rs 2,900 during the peak harvest months of February-March 2009. Import price and climatic condition during flowering and harvesting phase decided the price of the gram in the local market.

Coriander, one of the important spice crops in all curry powders, priced at Rs 3,500 per quintal in January 2008 touched an all time high of Rs 10,000 a quintal in July. The main reason for price surge was low output followed by low inventory (10-15 lakh bags against 15-20 lakh bags) and export demand. According to the analysis, the coriander price during February to March 2009, during harvest season would be in the range of Rs 6,500 to Rs 7,200 per quintal (coriander seed), Raveendran said.
