Coimbatore Is Known For Tertiary Eye Care

Coimbatore is today known for tertiary eye care with speciality eye hospitals dotting the city. Further, the city hosts the largest density of ophthalmologists in the country. Terming the eye care industry in Coimbatore as vibrant, Eye Foundation’s director and All India Ophthalmological Society’s chairman (scientific committee) D Ramamurthy said: “The best technology, IOL implants, viscoelastics and other accessories are available with us today.”

If cataract is the most frequently performed surgery on the human body, similar rapid strides have been made in the treatment of glaucoma, vitro retinal disorders, oculoplasty, refractive errors and the entire gamut of ophthalmology. “It is good that Coimbatore has tertiary eye care and all facilities available under one roof and not just treatment for cataract,” said Arvind Eye Care Hospital’s chief medical officer V Narendran.

He added the city is strong in eye care facilities mainly due to voluntary work. Apart from Arvind Hospital, other non-government organisations in and around Coimbatore are Sankara Eye Society, KG Eye Centre, GM Eye Hospital (Udumalpet), PSG Hospital, MV Eye Care and MG Eye Hospital. The city would soon see the entry of Vasan Eye Care. Its chairman Dr AM Arun said the hospital is on an expansion mode and is spreading its facilities pan-India and the Middle East.
