Lawers Staged Demo Against Indian Cricket Tour To Srilanka
A group of lawyers on Monday staged a demonstration in the district court premises here, demanding that the Indian team's cricket tour to Sri Lanka be cancelled and Centre immediately intervene on the Lankan issue. About 40 lawyers criticised foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon's visit to Sri Lanka, alleging that Menon had not discussed the main issue of ceasefire. In Chennai, members of 'Advocates Forum for Social Justice' staged a demonstration demanding cancellation of the tour.
The advocates led by forum president K Balu demonstrated for a short while on the NSC Bose road opposite the Madras High Court. They threatened to lay seige to the city residences of BCCI secretary N Srinivasan and chairman of the Selection Committee K Srikant if the tour was not called off. They said when the board could call off the national cricket team's tour of Pakistan following the November 26 terrorists attack in Mumbai there was no reason why the tour to the island could not be called off following the "killing of civilians" by the Sri Lankan Army.
