Field Day Programme

A field day programme on long-term fertilizer experiment was organised by the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. According to a university release, some 30 maize farmers from Thondamuthur and Alanthurai participated in the programme. Increasingly, the farmers were feeling that the application of inorganic fertilizers was spoiling the soil health and affecting the crop growth.

Some of the organic growers were also raising their voice in this regard. But, the results of experiments on long-term fertilization conducted for more than 35 years all over India revealed that there was no scientific truth behind such an opinion. The field day was held to enlighten the farmers about the impact of fertilization on soil health. They were enlightened on the importance of balanced fertilization and integrated nutrient management on the maize crop growth. They were also involved in group discussion. A handout on long-term fertilizer experimental results was distributed to the participants.
