Punitive Measures Gave Good Result
The disconnection of water lines that the Coimbatore Corporation has been carrying out as a punitive measure is driving defaulters to its tax counters. Corporation officials said Property Tax collection on Monday alone was Rs. 83.23 lakh. A club in A.T.T. Colony, whose water line was disconnected on Saturday, paid on Monday 50 per cent of the over Rs. 8 lakh it owed to the Corporation. Counters were open even on Saturdays. Punitive action drove people to the counters last Saturday and this resulted in a tax collection of more than Rs.21 lakh that day.
Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra said the civic body would wait till January 12 for all commercial establishments to pay up tax dues. The following day, a list of defaulters would be put on the Corporation’s website. This would make public the names of the defaulters and the sums they owed the Corporation in tax. The Corporation said the tax collection for the current financial year was Rs.61.69 crore till December 31. There was confidence that more substantial sum could be collected.
