Traffic rules should be strictly enforced: students' survey.
Road users should adhere to safety measures
Coimbatore: As part of the recently-concluded Road Safety Week celebrations, 24 M.Com students of Kongunadu College of Arts and Science conducted a survey on the traffic density, pattern and problems on Mettupalayam Road.

The survey report was released at a function held in the College. Coimbatore Mayor R. Venkatachalam released the survey report and Deputy Mayor N. Karthik received the first copy in the presence of the college principal A.A. Sivakumar.
The head of the department of commerce (post-graduate) R. Dhanalakshmi said the 12-hour survey from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. indicated that the congested and accident-prone Mettuppalayam Road witnessed movement of 26,695 vehicles. Majority of the vehicles was 11,984 two-wheelers, 4,326 cars and four-wheelers.
The report suggested the need for effective enforcement of rules and regulation by traffic police personnel on the road, especially during peak hours, besides educating road users on the need for adhering to road safety measures. The report also called for installation of automatic signal at GN Mills Pirivu and speed limit caution boards besides speed breakers on congested stretches.
Of the 26,695 vehicles, 1,241 were cycles, 11,984 two-wheelers, 2,069 scooters, 1,010 autorickshaws, 1,448 government buses, 273 college and school buses, 977 lorries, 2,167 jeeps and vans, 1,200 tempos. It was found that the traffic density started increasing from 8 a.m. and touched the peak between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.
The survey said of the motorists men were 92.81 per cent and women 7.44 per cent. 68.72 per cent of the male motorists and 59.39 per cent of female motorists obeyed traffic rules.
The survey, which helped in ascertaining the traffic density, pattern and problems, also indicated the need for conducting similar surveys on other arterial roads such as Avanashi Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Pollachi Road and Tiruchi Road.
The reports would help in planning road engineering, education and enforcement needsbesides drawing up traffic management plans depending on the need.
