5,000-odd families feard boz of land acquisition

Nearly 5,000-odd families living along Kalapatti and Saravanampatti areas fear that the land acquisition for the proposed bypass road connecting Avanashi Road with Mettupalayam Road via Sathyamangalam Road would render them homeless. The National Highways Authority of India is embarking on laying the road from Neelambur near Chinniampalayam on Avanashi Road and it would join the Mettupalayam Road near Narashima Naickenpalayam cutting across Sathyamangalam Road near Saravanampatti.

The bypass road was a long felt need of the Coimbatore City for decongesting the arterial Avanashi Road and also the major city roads.Avanashi Road with a number of corporate houses, educational institutions, industries and hospitals is already congested due to a heavy traffic. In addition, the road happens to be a gateway for vehicles entering the city from Chennai and Bangalore besides Erode, Salem and nearby areas. In addition, vehicles bound for Sathyamangalam and beyond especially in Karnataka and those bound for Mettupalayam, the Nilgiris and beyond could skip entering the city using the proposed bypass road. This would help not only in saving time but also in fuel besides decongesting the city, Highways officials pointed out these aspects as the advantages of the bypass road.

However, the proposed bypass road is expected to result in acquisition of residential and agricultural lands adversely affecting the livelihood of nearly 5,000 families. The agriculturists and residents of Kalapatti, Mayilampatti, Karayampalayam, Vellanaipatti, Sri Venkatesaperumal Nagar, Vilankurichi, MGR Nagar, Saravanampatti, Ragavi Garden, Idigarai, Maniakarampalayam and NSN Palayam have come together to protest and protect their interests. This has come in the wake of the survey work commenced by the authorities to identify the lands required for the bypass road alignment. The residents recently met at Vilankurichi and resolved to fight acquisition of their residential lands.

They pointed out that that scheme road on the similar lines was mooted by the Local Planning Authority (LPA) in 1994 and was shelved abruptly. If the road was laid at that point of time, a number of people would have refrained from constructing houses. But, now the authorities are planning a bypass road, which was not as per the proposal mooted by the LPA, they alleged. Now, the residents have decided to form a federation with two representatives from each locality and stage demonstrations to express their resentment against the State and Central Governments.
