Residents Moved To Court

A group of residents at Bharathi Colony at Peelamedu in the city have moved the Madras High Court against a project to construct 64 apartments in their colony. On a petition filed by the Peelamedu Bharathi Colony Veetumanai Urimaiyalargal Pothunala Sangham, the court has issued notice, returnable in four weeks, to 14 respondents, including the builder/promoter, Secretary to the Revenue Department, Commissioner of Town and Country Planning, Coimbatore Collector/Chairman of Local Planning Authority and Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation.

The court has also ordered status quo in respect of the project for these four weeks. The Sangham told presspersons here that it took the issue to the court because the builders had obtained building licence from the Corporation by giving false information that the people did not object to the move to create an access across a canal to the apartment. A licence obtained earlier had been cancelled in 2006 by the Corporation, following protests from the residents.

Its office-bearers said that instead of using a 25 ft access from Avanashi Road to form an approach road to the apartment, those promoting the project were bent on creating an access through Bharathi Colony. The attempt to create access across the canal blocked flow of water in it and created unhygienic conditions in the colony, they alleged.
