Yechury At Coimbatore
The turn of events in the nuclear deal after the Nuclear Suppliers Group waiver has confirmed the apprehensions voiced by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said Sitaram Yechury, Polit Bureau member of the party. Talking to reporters here, Mr.Yechury said that it was not a question of whether it was a success for the UPA and a defeat for the Left. The Left took a view point based on the assessment and evaluation of the ill-effects of the deal for India. On reports that the US had struck a “secret political understanding” with NSG countries such as Russia and France, Mr.Yechury said on issues such as Nuclear Suppliers Group co-operation for civilian nuclear initiatives and supply of nuclear fuel, the apprehensions that had been voiced by the CPI (M) were turning out to be true.
On the recent attacks on places of worship of the minority community and whether the Left would seek a ban on Hindutva outfits, Mr.Yechury said that terrorism knew no religion and such attempts that had been made in order to thwart peace would have to be dealt with in all firmness.
On whether the BJP would stand to gain in the wake of the CPI (M) drifting away from Congress and an alternative third front being elusive, Mr.Yechury said that BJP had not emerged even as a strong opposition in the last four years nor had it any credit of having made the UPA roll back its policies.
