5 Month Kid Performed Surgery
Sankara Eye Centre here has performed a surgery to remove congenital cataract in both the eyes of a five-month-old male child, Kalaimagan. Managing Trustee of the centre R.V. Ramani said on Tuesday that Kalaimagan was the child of Kuppan, a labourer, and Alamelu of Thirukovilur. The child’s problem came to light when Mr. Kuppan realised that his son did not take notice of him when he passed by. When he did not turn his head, the father took a closer look at the child and found white spots in the eyes.Mrs. Alamelu took him to a nearby Mission Hospital where doctors said the child would have to undergo a surgery. Owing to the lack of funds, they did not proceed further. One day, Mrs. Alamelu’s mother came to know about a free eye camp Sankara Eye Centre was to conduct at Thiyagadurgam. The child was taken to the camp, from where he was referred to Coimbatore for free surgery. The cataract in both the eyes was removed and intra-ocular lens implanted. Now, the child was able to identify the parents, Dr. Ramani said. If the surgery had not been done, the child would have become blind.
