Total Hip Replacement Surgery At CMCH

A worker of a hosiery unit in Tirupur is set to back the spring in his step after suffering pain in the left hip and leg for more than a decade. P. Raju (35) is using a walker to regain his lost, normal gait after a total hip replacement surgery at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.“He had Trendelenvergh gait that made him tilt to one side. This had been caused by the shortening of the left leg,” orthopaedic surgeon K. Kamalanathan told presspersons on Saturday. Eleven years ago, Mr. Raju fell from an autorickshaw and suffered an injury in the left hip. He underwent native treatment and was bed-ridden for two years. When he began to walk, he had pain and a limp. He endured this for the next nine years.
Investigations found that the left leg had shortened because of a fracture at the head of the thigh bone. Apart from Dr. Kamalanathan, surgeons S. Senthilnathan, S. Raja Rajan and Shanmugavelu comprised the team that performed the surgery. “The cost of the surgery is around Rs.1.5 lakh in private hospitals. This is done free of cost in CMCH,” hospital Dean (in-charge) V. Kumaran said. “We have done about 40 hip replacement surgeries. People should know that this facility is available in our hospital that serves the healthcare need of the poor,” he said.
