LCD plasma screen-fitted bus of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation which was flagged off on Monday. The State Government on Monday introduced vestibule buses with more seating and standing capacity on congested routes. The new buses flagged off by the Transport Minister, K.N. Nehru, included mofussil and long distance buses fitted with LCD plasma screen TVs.
For the first time, TNSTC had gone in for Build, Own, Operate and Maintain (BOOM) concept. Under this concept, private contractors would have to remit Rs. 262 a bus for a month for the broadcast rights and maintain the television sets and telecast the programmes. In Coimbatore and Erode district, the LCD plasma screen had been fitted in about 300 buses so far. For the remaining 700 to 800 long distance mofussil buses, the work would be over by April 2009.
The contractor taking up the work on BOOM concept could telecast commercial information, advertisements, road safety messages, important news items and announcements relating to public sector and government departments. The LCD plasma screens would be controlled from Chennai through GPS modem from a control room and the Government could run scroll messages of news value and government announcements. Programmes for telecast would be set every day through the GPS modem.
