Members of the Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangham have planned to stage a demonstration along with their family members in front of the Red Cross Society on Huzur Road here on December 26 at 10 a.m. in protest against land acquisition for various purposes. In a statement, M.R. Sivasamy, president of the Association, said that the demonstration would have the participation of farmers affected by land acquisition for Neelambur – Mettupalayam Bypass Road, Bharathiar University and Housing Board projects. The objective of the demonstration was to counter the move of the Government to acquire 4,000 acres of agricultural land for the purpose of laying a bypass road to Mettupalayam from Neelambur bypass road.
Mr.Sivasamy said that Mettupalayam Road could be widened into a four lane. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was keen on laying a bypass road rather than widening the road. NHAI was contending that the road could only be repaired and not widened. For laying a four lane road, the authorities required only 52 ft. For which, the trees along the road needed to be removed and the extent of space available would be close to 100 ft. The Rs. 249 crore allotted to the NHAI for the bypass road could be utilised for widening and re-laying the Mettupalayam Road into a four lane.
