New Traffic Pattern On Avanashi Road Flyover Smoothen The Flow

The new traffic pattern on the Avanashi Road flyover permitting only four-wheelers and regulating the movement of two-wheelers and three-wheelers through the underpass has improved the flow of vehicles. The flyover used to witness a heavy flow of vehicles during the peak hour and there used to be traffic snarls. Hence, the City Police Commissioner, K.C. Mahali, along with Deputy Commissioners of Police K. Shanmugavel (Law and Order) and N. Kamini (Crime and Traffic) chalked out a plan for easing the congestion on the flyover. As per the original construction plan of the Avanashi Road flyover which dates back to 1974, the underpasses beneath the flyover connecting Avanashi Road with Mill Road, Goods Shed Road and Brooke Bond Road were meant for two-wheelers. Hence, it was decided to implement the original construction plan.

The renovation of the three-decade-old flyover has been just taken up and works were on. The underpass that remained unused all along remained only as a parking space and also as a hideout for anti-social elements, who took advantage of the darkness. The new traffic pattern was announced on February 15 and was implemented with effect from March 1. Mr. Mahali along with Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra and Highways and PWD officials inspected the underpass beneath the flyover. The place has been spruced up, repairs and defects had been rectified and even lighting has been improved.

With regard to complaints of water-logging, Mr. Mahali said that arrangements were being made by agencies concerned for putting in place high-power effective motor pumpsets for pumping out rain water. On Monday during the morning peak hour traffic, the flow of vehicles on the flyover remained smooth. The underpass beneath the flyover has been barricaded for segregating the up and down traffic. Officials at the lower level pointed out that motorists had no grievances at least for now and rainy day management could be planned before the onset of South-West monsoon.

However, the only disgruntled section would be the shop-keepers in the flyover area who had all along been using the underpass as a place for parking of their vehicles. An alternative parking space for the shop-keepers would make the system completely acceptable to all sections. Besides posting traffic constables to regulate the flow of traffic, city police are also deploying constables in uniform as well as civil dress for keeping anti-social elements at bay.
