Review Meeting Of The Prevention Of Road Accidents
The ongoing micro-level traffic planning and study programme has yielded rich dividends in terms of seven out of the ten major roads turning fatal accident-free and the total number of fatal accidents touching the lowest of 14 during October, said K.C. Mahali, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, on Saturday. He was presiding over the monthly review meeting of the Prevention of Road Accidents/Micro-level Traffic Planning Study Programme and Golden Hour Medical Aid Programme. Deputy Commissioners of Police S. Rajendran (Law and Order), K. Shanmugavel (Crime and Traffic), G. Bhaktavatchalam, Chairman of KG Hospitals, M. Padmanabhan of Bharathiar University, Pa. Kuppusamy, President of Scouts Mrinalini R. David, Principal of Bishop Appasamy College and others took part in the meeting. Mr. Mahali, in his presentation, said that from January 1 to October 31, a total of 259 lives were lost on the road of which 132 were from the other Corporation roads while the rest were from major arterial roads.
The major achievement of the concerted efforts put in by all was the reduction of the number of fatal accidents to 14. This was the lowest fatal accident rate, he said. On the non-fatal accidents front, a total of 957 persons had sustained injuries. Motorcycles were the highest number of vehicles involved in accidents. In the entire year, so far a total of 57 motor cycles were involved in accidents followed by 44 trucks, 40 TNSTC buses and 20 private buses. Of the 491 motorcyclists who sustained injuries in accidents, 490 were without helmets and of the 113 dead in motor cycle accidents 111 of them were without helmets.
A glance of the accidents from January to October revealed that the lowest of 14 was achieved in October while the highest was 41 in April when the City Police had just started the remedial measures. Of the ten major roads, seven have become fatal accident-free roads namely Kamarajar Road, Thadagam Road, Maruthamalai Road, Mettuppalayam Road, L&T Bypass Road, Palakkad Road and Sathyamangalam Road. Now efforts are on to combat the fatal accidents on Pollachi Road which witnessed 3 in October, Tiruchi Road witnessed one and Avanashi Road two.
