Prevent For Collecting Excess Entry Fee

The Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) has appealed to the District Collector to take steps to prevent cinema theatres from collecting excess entry fee especially for movies being released for the Deepavali festival. In a memorandum, the Secretary of CCC, K. Kathirmathiyon said that after the withdrawal of the entertainment tax completely, the cinema theatres were permitted to collect a maximum admission rate of Rs.50, Rs 40, Rs 25 and Rs 15 for AC theatres in corporation, Municipalities, town panchayat and village panchayat areas and for non AC theaters the maximum rates were Rs 30, Rs 20 and Rs.10.

Recently the court had upheld the decision of the Government regarding the suspension of C Form licence and had also imposed fine on theatres for collecting excess rates. The practice of collecting excess rates across the counters have become a regular affair in most of the theatres, whenever new films were screened.

Though action was initiated against a few theatres based on complaints, the practice continues. Selling of tickets for new films at higher rates was frequently highlighted in the media also. For the ensuing Deepavali festival, most of the theatres would screen the new films and they are likely to sell tickets for exorbitant rates. There was no provision to issue all the tickets of a particular show to a particular group/association to enable them to sell the tickets for higher rates. All the tickets have to be sold only through the counters at the theatres.

Hence to safeguard the interest of the consumers CCC requested that suitable instructions be issued to officials to have a closer watch over all the theatres particularly in Coimbatore and Tirupur including the sub-urban theatres, during the Deepvali festival week. Many people don’t know whom to complain to. The administration should provide phone numbers of the officials to the public to enable them to contact the concerned officials immediately so that they can take action against the theatres.
