'Best NGO of India' award to Sankara eyecare ..

City-based Sankara eyecare institutions has been adjudged as the 'Number one NGO of India', for its excellent contributions in the field of eyecare.R.V. Ramani, Founder and Managing Trustee of the institutions received the award, carrying a citation and cash amount of Rs 4 lakhs, from Sayeeda Hammed, Member Planning Commission at a recently held function in Delhi.

The award, jointly instituted by London-headquartered Resource Alliance and Delhi-based Nand and Khemka Foundation, was given to Sankara to promote its good standards and practices in resource mobilization, accountability and transparency, she told reporters here on Thursday.It was also given to create inspiration for other non profit organisations and promote cross-regional learning, she added.

The seven hospitals under the institutions and three in partnership, across India, would together undertake one lakh free surgeries to the deserving poor during 2009-10, Dr. Ramani said.
