Maharaja Theme Park to open on Feb 26

Coimbatore: For the entertainment-starved citizens of Coimbatore, the waiting seems to be finally over. The Rs 25-crore amusement park christened `Maharaja World' that was originally slated to open in April last year, will open to the public on February 26.

This theme park located close to the Neelambuur bye-pass on the Coimbatore-Salem national highway will be the nearest entertainment gateway for the people of Coimbatore whose only source of relaxation all these years was the VOC park in the heart of the city.

Mr P. Sathiyamoorthy, Managing Director, Maharaja Theme Parks & Resorts Ltd, Coimbatore, told presspersons that the group, which has a strong presence in the educational and industrial sectors, had forayed into the entertainment field to meet a long-felt need of the people of the city. Though Coimbatore is a bustling industrial city with the IT sector adding further momentum to its growth, it has been bereft of any major source of relaxation with the nearest theme park being 12 km away. The work on `Maharaja World' has been going on for the past three years but it had gained momentum only in the past 18 months.

He said the park has come up on a 15-acre site and in line with international trends the project promoters have tried to make it a compact one. An attempt has been made to replicate the most attractive features of the theme parks from not only within India but also from outside without losing sight of the fact that these should provide an affordable experience to the public. He said the park, apart from having the common entertainment facilities, would have a multiplex with two theatres. It would also house a mini golf course and an auditorium. The entry fee is Rs 350 for adults and Rs 300 for children.

A proposal to charge a discounted entry fee from school children visiting as a group during weekdays was also on the cards.
